At Sea | FAQ

Where do we fish?
Garibaldi is a small port town and maritime community at the northern end of Tillamook Bay, close to where the Bay flows into the Pacific. People here are close companions with the sea.
At the marina, commercial fishermen haul freshly caught Dungeness crabs, Ling Cod, Rockfish, and even octopus up to the docks. Sport fishermen tell tales at the filet table about their record-size Chinook salmon while, down on the water, kayakers paddle out to look for bald eagles, pigeon guillemots, and purple martins flying over the bay.

What will we catch?
Our main target is the Black Rockfish (a tasty, mild, white fish), but many other varieties, including Ling Cod, are often caught on this trip. Limit for Rockfish (2022 season) is five per person, and Ling Cod limit is two per person. We often catch our limit of Rockfish; Ling Cod catches vary day to day. As a bonus, six crab pots are set at the beginning of each tour (ocean conditions permitting), and picked up on the way back in.

Do I need a fishing license?
Yes, but we will secure your fishing and shellfish license, on your behalf, in advance of your excursion.

What if I need to cancel my reservation?
You may cancel your reservation for a full refund at any time up until seven (7) days prior to your excursion date.

I have a health condition, can I participate?
Fishing on the Oregon Coast can be a great adventure but requires general good health and fitness. Waters can be rough at times with the potential for repetitive jarring motions aboard the vessel. If you have any of the following conditions (or any health condition not listed), please get permission from your physician before booking any trip:
• Heart condition
• Bad back
• Recent surgery
• Injuries to back, shoulder, hip, or knee
• Conditions that limit mobility (including excessive weight)
• Vertigo
It is up to you and your physician to determine your ability to participate. However, we do reserve the right to refuse service if we believe it could be unsafe or unwise for a particular person to participate in this experience.

Why do we have to leave so early?
You know what they say…” First light, first bite!” We love our sleep as much as the next guy, but we love a successful day of fishing even more. We want to make sure you have an action-packed day of fishing and being on the water at dawn will guarantee we hook plenty of fish.

What should I wear?
The weather is always cooler on the water, and this is Oregon – so it is best to be prepared! We recommend dressing in layers with a warm jacket, hat and gloves. Though not always necessary, Antica Terra will provide waterproof pants, jackets and rubber boots if requested.

Should I bring snacks? Water?
We’ve got you! Your Antica Terra host will board the boat with a cooler stocked with non-alcoholic beverages and ample snacks to tide you over until we transition, gratefully, to crab and wine.

Should I take medication for seasickness?
If you think you are likely to get sick, you can take medication such as Dramamine or Bonine the night before the trip, and again in the morning at least one hour before your trip (follow dosing instructions on package). If you are certain you do not get seasick, it may be unnecessary but if you are unsure, we highly recommend taking this precaution. The most effective seasickness medication seems to be “the patch” which is available by prescription only, so ask your doctor well in advance if you are interested in this option. The patch works best when put on the night before your trip.

What if our trip is cancelled due to weather or ocean conditions?
Our fishing trips are occasionally cancelled due to rough or unsafe sea conditions. We understand that some guests are travelling very long distances to fish with us, and we apologize for any inconvenience – but our primary concern is your safety and that of our crew. While we will do our best to contact you at least one day before a trip is cancelled, we cannot always be certain until that morning. In the event that the ocean or bar conditions are deemed unsafe or too rough by the Captain, every effort will be made to accommodate you on a different day. If alternate accommodations cannot be made, we will provide a full refund.

If the swell is too big to set out crab pots, how will we get lunch? Wines?
While we are able to crab 80-90% of the time, Captains make the final call on crabbing the morning of the trip. When the swell is over 6 ft, or if the wind is strong in the afternoon, retrieving crab pots in shallow water can be dangerous. If crabbing is unavailable, we’ll head into town with our giant cooler of wines and you’ll have the most absurdly lovely fish and chips/wine pairing ever seen on the Pacific coast.

What are the age restrictions?
We are happy to invite kids seven and older to join us on our excursion.

Is there a restroom onboard?
There is! But you have to call it “the head” or the Captain looks at you funny.

Can you accommodate wheelchairs?
Yes. Please ask us for details when booking.

Is smoking permitted onboard?
Smoking of tobacco is allowed outside only if it isn’t bothering other guests. As a courtesy to non-smoking guests, please smoke downwind or near the stern of the vessel while underway. If the smoke is bothering other guests, the Captain, their crew or your Antica Terra host or may ask you to discontinue. Marijuana is not allowed in any form on our vessels.

Is alcohol permitted onboard?
A little. Mimi Adams, Antica Terra’s Assistant Winemaker and best angler, taught us that the fish give the best fight when you have a beer in your other hand. Zalto glassware + a rocking boat = disaster but a can of local lager never hurt anyone. We’ll have a few cold ones available just in case.
